Depletion of weapon stores and manpower in the ten-year long Sino-American War led to some bases being permanently shut down and converted into automated strongpoints to protect against an expected communist invasion of the mainland. Bases served countless purposes, including training, storage, clandestine experimentation and top secret weapons development, and even automated defense posts. Many permanent installations, like the Sierra Army Depot, dated back to the first half of the 20th century and earlier, and many more were built at sites where military fortifications and camps were placed as early as the American Revolution (like Fort Strong). The United States Armed Forces made extensive used of permanent military bases and other installations to carry out their duties, using infrastructure steadily built up over the course of centuries.
